We have all heard how a lack of sleep affects our functioning the following morning by making us feel the lethargic and grogy. But what if we were to tell you that it also takes a toll on how good you perform during your waking hours? Well, isn’t that bad news for most of us? With more than one-third of the UK relying on sleeping tablets already, new research has only made matters worse for all those in their middle ages and conforming to a strict job schedule.
An online study conducted on arXiv.org –an online depositary for scientific studies and research papers in the fields of Science and Math revealed two significant findings related to poor sleep. According to the study, those who don’t enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep of more than 6 hours for two consecutive nights will feel sluggish for the following 6 days. Shocking, right? Wait till you hear the second one and realise why the sleeping tablets induct is growing so rapidly in the UK.
The research also proposed that those who stayed awake for another extra hour i.e. slept for not more than 5 hours per night, had noticeable poor performance. The study involved over 30,000 participants whose sleeping routines were recorded over a course of 18 months which makes about 3 million nights analyzed in total. To be noted, the participants weren’t involved in any form of sleep therapy and neither did they buy sleeping tablets of any sort to induce sleep.
The research study was led by Tim Althoff, a Ph.D. student in computer sciences from Stanford University. Till this date, this was the largest research study to measure the impact of sleep on one’s performance. The research used keystroke speed as a medium to examine one’s attentiveness and productivity. The participants were requested to browse multiple websites and their click interactions were tracked via a fitness wearable device. The results revealed that poor sleep on the first night led to a 1.2% decline in productivity whereas two consecutive nights of insufficient sleep resulted in a 4.8% decline in one’s productivity. The following days also saw a noticeable difference in productivity levels when compared with the results of those who slept for more than 6 hours every night. If this is the case, one seriously needs to start looking for ways to counter these effects as one’s productivity is directly proportional to monetary benefits and career boosts.
